Streak

Howe now has a 4-game winning streak with the season finale win over Callisburg last year and the three wins to open this season.  The last time Howe won four in a row was a five-game streak in the 2016 season (wins over Whitesboro, Pilot Point, Callisburg, Grandview, and Jefferson).

Thursday

The last time Howe played on a Thursday night was on Nov. 12, 2015 in the bi-district championship against Edgewood.  Howe trailed 27-0 until midway through the second quarter and eventually came from behind 43-33 to win in what was the greatest come-from-behind victory in school history.

Howe vs. Boyd

Howe is 1-2 overall vs. the Boyd Yellowjackets.  Howe’s win came Oct. 10, 2010 in a 47-20 shootout at Bulldog Stadium.  The first game between the two teams was in the area championship round on Nov. 19, 1998 at Pennington Field in Bedford.  Boyd advanced past Howe, 28-13.  

This is Howe’s second trip to Boyd’s new stadium that opened in 2010.  The Dogs lost 55-6 in 2011.

Howe vs. Bells History

Howe has played 95 games against opponents other than Bells lately.  The last matchup between the two schools came on Oct. 9, 2009 with Bells winning, 12-6 in Bells.  This is the 48th meeting overall between Howe and Bells.  Howe owns a 34-8-5 record in the series that dates back to Nov. 20, 1936.  Howe won that first matchup at Bulldog Stadium, 19-6.  The Bulldogs won 7 games in a row over Bells from 1945-1962.  Howe then won 8 games in a row from 1979-1994.  Bells has only beaten Howe in back-to-back games once (1964 and 1965).

The Panthers have only won one game at Bulldog Stadium since 1965.  Overall at home, Howe has a 21-4-1 record against Bells.

The Bulldogs start the season with a win for the first time since 2015 (beat Bonham 41-14).  Howe is now 9-3 on opening night since 2007 and 24-15 since 1980.

Howe is  9-7 lifetime in games played in August.  The first August game was a 26-6 loss to Honey Grove at home on Aug. 30, 2002.

Howe vs. S&S History

This is the 34th meeting between Howe and S&S.  Howe leads the series, 23-10 and has dominated by outscoring the Rams, 841-387.   Howe played one game vs. Sadler before consolidation back in 1958; Howe won 32-0.

The Bulldogs won 11 in a row over the Rams from 1983-1993 and pitched six-straight shutouts from 1984-1992.  The Bulldogs set a school record 76-points on October 4, 1991. It was a 14-0 S&S shutout over Howe that ended the streak in 1996.

Since the 8-year domination by Howe, the ‘Dogs are 6-3 vs. S&S going back to 1997.

Howe is 11-5 overall at S&S with the last loss coming in 2007 (28-24).  The ‘Dogs are 8-2 at S&S since 1983.  The Bulldogs have shutout S&S eight times which is the second most of any opponent (Bells 14).

Howe vs. Ponder Pregame Notes

It is season number 75 for the Howe Bulldogs who started the football program officially on September 20, 1935 in Tioga.  Howe did not field a team from 1949-1957 due to a lack of participants.  The Bulldogs have an overall record of 382-348-24 heading into the 2018 season.

Howe has a 2-2 record versus Ponder dating back to the first game in 2010.  Howe won that first matchup, 43-10 at Ponder.  Howe lost in 2011, 22-6 at home.  The Bulldogs also lost early in the season of 2014 in Ponder, 27-20, but bounced back in 2015 to romp the Lions 49-0 at home.  Overall the Bulldogs have outscored Ponder, 118-59 in the four games.

Howe is coming off a 1-9 season from a year ago.  It was the first time the ‘Dogs had only won one game since 2005.  Howe has never had a winless season but won only one game in 1962, 1963, 1975, 2004, 2005, and 2017.

Bill Jehling will start his tenure as the head coach of Howe tonight.  He’s 42-years-old, of San Antonio, transferred to Pittsburg, Pennsylvania where he played football and baseball at Duquesne University (BA, MA).  He’s a veteran of the US Marine Corps where he served from 1997-2005 including a tour in Iraq.

Jehling replaces Zack Hudson, who went 30-28 at Howe and recently took the head coaching position at 4A Mabank.  Hudson was 29-19 heading into 2017 and holds the record for most playoff games and wins in school history with eight games and five wins.

Howe has an enrollment of 341 which is barely over the cutoff of 334 for Class 3A, Division II.  That makes Howe the fifth smallest 3A, Division I school in the state.  Ponder checks in with an enrollment of 416 which is comparable to Pottsboro’s 424.  Howe’s district mates are Bonham, Rains, Van Alstyne, Commerce, Pottsboro, and Lone Oak.  Bonham is the enrollment leader with 488.

Ponder is in the same District 4-3A with Bowie, Whitesboro, Pilot Point, Brock, Boyd, and Paradise.   The enrollment leader in that district is Bowie with 495.

The Lions are coached by Russell Ballard who is 12-19 since 2015 at Ponder.  They’ve finished 3-7, 6-5, and 3-7 in those seasons.  Prior to Ponder, Ballard was at Ranchview High School in the Carrollton Farmers Branch ISD where he was the offensive coordinator and head coach of boys track.  He also taught and coached at Fort Worth ISD at North Side and Diamon Hill-Jarvis High Schools.

Ballard is a graduate of Electra High School.

Listen to the live broadcast for the ‘Air Segleski’

On the broadcast, you might hear a reference a few times to “Air Segleski” and you might be wondering, ‘what does that mean?’  Howe’s Defensive Coordinator is a very excitable coach and when the ‘Dogs make a great defensive play, he will often jump in the air several feet.   A one-foot high jump is usually for third down turn-away or a batted ball.  A two-foot high jump indicates a sack or a tackle for a loss.  A three-foot jump usually is for a fumble recovery, interception, or a “snot-flopper” of a hit.  Listen tonight as we hope for a 3-foot Air Segleski.

Howe Bulldogs powerlifting team win regional championship

The Howe Bulldogs powerlifting team traveled to Chico on Friday and came away not only with multiple state qualifiers but also a regional title.

Howe went home with Mikey Hymel and Mason Riggs qualifying for state and four others that were alternates for state in Chase Barnett, Spencer Akins, Joseph Brennan, and Chase Harvey.

Mikey Hymel, who is now ranked third in the state, placed first in the 165-pound division with a total lift weight of 1,375 pounds (545 squat, 315 bench, 515 deadlift). He was awarded Outstanding Bench Pressor and Outstanding Deadlifter.

Mason Riggs finished second overall in the 181-pound division with a total weight of 1,160.  Joseph Brennan placed third in the 165-pound division with a lift weight of 1,155.  Chase Harvey placed fourth in the 220-pound division with a lift weight of 1,300.  Spencer Akins placed fourth in the 148-pound division with a lift weight of 1,040.  Chase Barnett placed fifth in the 123-pound division with a lift weight of 810 pounds.

Nathan Duffee and Andrew Griffin were regional qualifiers but didn’t place.

Bill Jehling named Howe’s new athletic director and head football coach

Bill Jehling was hired Monday night during the school board meeting to take over as Howe’s new head football coach and athletic director. Jehling, a former Marine, was hired after spending the last two seasons as the head coach of the Class 4A Hamshire-Fannett Longhorns. Jehling is a native of San Antonio, but his father was transferred to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. After attending a small private school there, he played football and baseball at Duquesne University, earning a bachelor’s and master’s degree. Following a short stint teaching in Pittsburgh, Jehling served in the United States Marine Corps from 1997 to 2005 including a tour of duty in Iraq.

Prior to taking the Hamshire-Fannet job, Jehling was at Lumberton where he served as the defensive coordinator. He previously was the head coach at Cushing High School for the 2013 and 2014 seasons. Prior to taking the Cushing job, Jehling held the posts of strength and conditioning coach, powerlifting coach, and assistant baseball coach at Richardson JJ Pearce. He has also worked as a middle school coordinator in Frisco and taught in Mesquite.

The shot heard ’round Texas; Monk’s 3-pointer steals bi-district crown from Howe

The long and tall Whitesboro junior Casey Monk, needing only two points to win the game with five seconds remaining, took a big risk and shot a long 3-point shot over the outstretched arms of the equally long-stature of sophomore Ally Harvey. As the rainbow left, it  had precisely a 28.21 percent chance of being the game-winner due to that being Monk’s 3-point percentage on the year. As the ball went through the air, seemingly in slow motion, one could almost see the percentages going up and up an up just as a bowler spins the ball that you immediately know that it will spin towards the middle pin. As the ball completely missed the rim and entered only the net, it gave Whitesboro a 45-43 lead and took away the opportunity for Howe to claim stake to their sixth consecutive bi-district crown.

Howe had their opportunities and looked to be in command as junior Calley Vick was fouled on Whitesboro’s seventh team foul which gave Vick a one-and-one opportunity. She hit the first shot that gave Howe a 43-39 lead with 45.6 seconds remaining. Vick’s second shot rimmed out which gave Whitesboro the ball in the hands of their point guard Karlee Schuessler who drilled a 3-pointer with 30 seconds remaining to cut the Howe lead to one point. With 22 seconds left in the game, senior leading scorer Peyton Streetman was fouled. Howe’s most accomplished free-throw shooter missed the front-end of the one-and-one and that set up the game-winner by Monk.

Whitesboro Head Coach James Garner’s game plan was to try and take Streetman out of the game. That plan was mostly successful early in the game as the pig-tailed princess only scored four points (all free-throws) in the first quarter and the Lady Cats shut her out in the second quarter. The Lady Bulldogs were unable to make up for the offensive production and struggled to pull away at any point in the game.

What Whitesboro did to Howe at the end of the game is what Howe did to Whitesboro at the end of the first half. With 3:28 left to go in the second period, the Lady Cats led 17-9 and appeared to be stretching away from Howe. But sophomore Cassidy Anderson made a slick pass to Harvey for a two-foot jumper that put Howe within six. Streetman then pulled off a quick pass in the lane to Harvey who hit another short jumper to bring Howe within four at 17-13 with 2:18 left before the half. Streetman then hit two big free throws to bring Howe within two at the thirty-second mark. Sophomore Jenna Honore made a tremendous steal on the right side of the court and took it coast to coast for the layup to tie the game at 17 leaving only 10 seconds remaining on the first half clock.

Howe appeared to come out of the half in full command, but Whitesboro got hot and hit three consecutive 3-pointers to finish out the third period with a 31-28 lead over Howe.

The first points of the fourth period was an NBA style 3-pointer by Monk that extended Whitesboro’s lead to 34-28. Moments later, Monk hit yet another 3-pointer to give Whitesboro a 37-30 lead with 6:26 left in the game. The fifth consecutive 3-pointer by the Lady Cats prompted Howe Head Coach Derek Lands to call timeout and discuss the distance Howe was allowing Monk at the perimeter. The results from the perfectly timed Lands symposium had Harvey in the face of Monk throughout the remainder of the contest and even the final shot. Streetman quickly hit a 3-pointer followed by a Vick jumper to bring Howe within two at 37-35. Vick also turned around the game with a 3-pointer with 4:18 remaining in the game to give Howe their first lead, 38-35, since midway through the third period.

But the final four minutes were scarred with defense and missed opportunities and a shocking finish.

Streetman’s fourth-period rally in points helped her to become Howe’s leading scorer with 13 in her final game. She was followed by Harvey, who totaled 10 and pulled down a team-leading nine rebounds. Other scorers were Vick (8), Payton Griffin (5), Honore (4), and Anderson (3).

Just behind Harvey in rebounds was Griffin with eight and Streetman (4), and Vick (4).

Howe finishes the season with a record of 21-10 on the season.

Howe at Pilot Point 2017



Game Number 753 in school history.  Howe has a record of 381-347-24 since 1935.  Howe has lost nine games in a row dating back to last season’s regional playoff loss to eventual state champion Mineola.  It is the longest losing streak for the Bulldogs football program since a 12-game losing streak from October 2004 – October 2005.

The Bulldogs are scoring an average of 11.38 points per game which the 16th fewest in the 74 years of the program.  On the flip side, the defense is allowing 37.50 points per game which is ranks 73rd of the 74 teams.  Statistically speaking, this Howe Bulldogs team has a point-per-game margin of -26.13 which is the worst among all Bulldogs teams going back to 1935.  The previous mark was -25.00 per game by the 2004 team.  Howe’s defense is allowing 385.13 yards per game which is the most of all recorded teams in Howe history.  But it is without question, no Howe team has ever played a tougher schedule than the one this current season.

This 2017 season has been eerily similar to the team 25 years ago that went 2-8 after Howe had gone through several seasons of winning records and gold footballs.  That year Joey McQueen, who had the fifth best team in school history in 1991, all of a sudden had the third worst in 1992.  Howe scored 27 and gave up 7 on average in 1991 only to reverse the trend in 1992 and score 10 per game and allow 27.  The 2016 Bulldogs scored 31 per game and allowed 22 and the 2017 Bulldogs have scored an average of 11 and allowed 38.  With a shallow pipeline, the 1992 reversal season for McQueen became his final year in Howe as he took the same position at Mason ISD before the 1993 season.   Howe Head Coach Zack Hudson, however, has a pipeline that is stocked, but not until the current seventh graders arrive as freshmen in two years.

The Series:

Howe is 14-19-1 against Pilot Point going back to 1935.  The Bearcats won 8-straight from 1989-1998 and the streak was snapped on one of the greatest games in school history when Howe won, 28-14 in the bi-district championship in Denton.  Since that game, the series is even at 2-2 for each team.
