Howe vs. Whitewright history

Whitewright owns the overall series over Howe 24-15.  The first game was played on October 11, 1935 at Whitewright and the Tigers shutout Howe 25-0 in Howe’s third ever game in school history.  Whitewright has outscored Howe 858-641.  The only team to have more wins vs. Howe is Van Alstyne (34).

Howe only beat Whitewright twice from 1935-1981 losing 12 out of 13 from 1948-1981.

Howe then won eight in a row from 1982-1991 including five consecutive shutouts from 1985-1991.  During this time, Howe set school records for points twice.  In 1985, Howe scored 70 points to set the school record at Whitewright.  In 1990, Howe eclipsed that mark by putting 75 on Whitewright at Bulldog Stadium (which is still the most points ever scored by Howe at Bulldog Stadium.  **The school record for points by Howe is 76 set at S&S in 1991).

Whitewright then won nine straight from 1999-2007.

Howe has currently won four in a row from 2008-2013.

Howe’s overall record at Whitewright is 6-14 and have been outscored 459-284.

Bulldogs break records as history repeats itself

Howe’s 589 yards rushing and 599 yards of total offense Friday night vs. Tom Bean are new highs in school history.  Also, never before had two running backs on the same Howe team ever rushed for 200 yards in the same game, much less 250 yards in the same game.  Anthony Hawthorne’s 292 yards along with Stratton Carroll’s 266 make them the first tandem to ever do so.  Hawthorne’s 292 yards rushing was close to a single-game record.  Garrette Griffin rushed for 310 yards vs. Whitewright on September 14, 2012.  Easton Ross also had three interceptions and I’m still scouring the record books to find someone with four.

The game vs. Tom Bean is so similar to the Howe vs. Tom Bean game 30 years ago, that it’s a bit creepy.  Howe played that game on October 19, 1984 at Bulldog Stadium (two days off from this one).  Howe rushed for a school record 553 yards.  Ernie Willis tallied three interceptions that night vs. Tom Bean.

A full list of leading single-game top rushers will be listed in tomorrow’s Howe Enterprise

Howe won 12 in a row from 1943-1986 and 18 of 19 from 1935-1986.

The first game was played on November 27, 1935 in Tom Bean.  Howe won that initial contest 39-0 on the strength of Billy Bryant Cloud’s 100-yard performance.

The first game played at Bulldog Stadium between the two schools was on November 27, 1936 with a 30-0 Howe win over Tom Bean.

Tom Bean’s first win over Howe was on November 20, 1941 in Tom Bean.  It was their only win over Howe in 52 years.

The Howe domination ended on November 6, 1987 on a strange night in Tom Bean with Howe (8-1) thought to be a lock for the district-runner-up and advance to the playoffs.  However, Tom Bean’s “Black Dot Game” was born and Howe was upset 23-20 by Tom Bean and their rushing attack led by Brian Hamm and his 258 rushing yards.  It was the only year in which Howe Head Coach Jim Fryar would miss the playoffs in his tenure.  Howe finished 8-2 and missed the playoffs.   **two players’ sons from that 1987 classic will be playing tonight (Howe’s Brian Ross/Easton Ross and Tom Bean’s Chad Ashlock/Dylan Ashlock).

Since that fateful 1987 night, Howe leads the series 10-8.

Howe is 16-4 vs. Tom Bean at Bulldog Stadium.  Tom Bean’s first win in Howe came in 1995 after losing their first 13 tries.  Tom Bean has won three of the last four in Howe.  The last time Tom Bean played in Howe was on September 26, 2008 when Tom Bean won 7-6.  Howe’s last win over Tom Bean at Bulldog Stadium came on October 20, 2006 in a 27-0 shutout.

Last year,  Howe won won 43-20 in Tom Bean.
