The Howe Area Chamber of Commerce board met this week to discuss a summer event to benefit all Howe non-profits. The event, dubbed “Hotter ‘N Howe Summer Bash 2019” will be a kid-friendly family event held at Howe’s Bicentennial Park on US Highway 75 on July 27, 2019 from 3 pm – dark. The two-ballpark area will feature a water slide and other activities.

The planning is in the beginning stages, but the chamber has had great responses from the youth sports organizations, Howe Volunteer Fire Department, Girl Scouts, and more.

Confirmed are Howe Youth Baseball who will host a home run derby at Hash Field, sell burgers, and are considering a movie after dark at the ballpark. Howe Youth Volleyball will sell funnel cakes and host a volleyball tournament. The Howe Volunteer Fire Department will have their trucks on-site and are considering a water-balloon fight and a slip ‘n slide. The Howe Development Foundation will be selling drinks including sodas and water. The Howe Chamber will provide a water slide, sell popsicles, and sausage on a stick. The Girl Scouts Troop 3698 will be selling Cowboy Nachos.

Others are meeting to determine their role in the event. Howe Youth Softball is considering hosting a kickball tournament at North Field. Howe Athletic Booster Club is considering selling Dip ‘N Dots. Howe Youth Football is considering a football throw.

Each organization could use sponsorship help as the Howe Chamber’s water slide is sponsored by HIT Exteriors, LLC, TLD Design Consulting, and Housewarmers of Grayson County.

On Tuesday, June 26, 2019, at approximately 6:00 am, the Grayson County Sheriff’s Office executed a search warrant at a residence in the 500 block N. Burdette Ave Sherman, Texas, this warrant stemmed from a lengthy investigation into Internet child pornography.

The Grayson County Sheriff’s Office is part of the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force program which is a nationwide network made up of 4,500 federal, state, and local law enforcement and prosecutorial agencies. These agencies are continually engaged in proactive and reactive investigations and prosecutions of persons involved in child abuse and exploitation involving the internet. Task Force colleagues from the Grand Prairie Police Department assisted in the investigation and Sherman Police Department assisted with the search warrant.

A 35-year-old white male from Sherman was arrested for Possession of Child Pornography. He is currently being held in the Grayson County Jail his bond has not been set at this time. This case is still under investigation when the investigation is complete charges to be presented to the District Attorney’s Office.

The Howe Bulldogs football program will celebrate 75 seasons this fall as the program officially began in 1935 under the UIL. Howe fielded football teams prior to 1935, but not on an official basis. The program was ceased after the 1948 season due to the lack of players available to field a team. In 1958, the Bulldogs once again hit the field as an 8-man program for two seasons before once again becoming an 11-man program and have remained so since. The overall record for Howe football is 385-355-24.

The football schedule has been released as well as all fall sports.

Charles Pelkey died on June 19th in Howe, TX, at the age of 75.

Charles is survived by his wife, Donna, and daughters, Karen and Kelly.

Charles was born in Fordyce, AK, to Dorothy and Ernest Pelkey. His father, Ernest Edwin was killed in World War II a few months after Charles was born. Dorothy and ‘Chuck’ moved to Angleton, TX. where he graduated from Angleton High School and later attended Texas Tech University. Charles married Donna Taylor in 1968 and moved to Friendswood, TX, where they raised two daughters. Charles spent his career as an electrical engineer. Charles was a private pilot in earlier life and enjoyed model building.

Charles and Donna moved to Tulsa, OK, in 2000 and later retired to Howe, TX, in 2014. They are members of First Baptist Howe.

A Memorial Service is scheduled for June 21 at 10:00 at First Baptist Howe.

A visitation is scheduled for June 22 from 1-2, with service at 2:00, at Autry Funeral Home in Jacksonville, TX; graveside service to follow at Griffin Cemetery. The family would like to thank the members of First Baptist Howe and friends and neighbors in Howe.

The dates of the annual Lone Star Hoops Camp were changed this year due to the new ruling that affects all male and female coaches using the school gym facilities. Therefore, this year’s camp had to be moved back a week to July 1-4.

“We know this presents a problem for a lot of people, including me, as I have had to shuffle my schedule around a bit.  That being said, I would never miss such a grand event as our 20th annual HOWE-Lone Star basketball camp.  What a great place to be exposed to people who love the game,” said Jan Jernberg, founder of Lone Star Hoops Camp.

Jernberg is making a “final call” to any of those who haven’t registered yet. In a written statement, he said, he would take any phone call, text, email, “smoke signals”, etc. from any “late-comers” and pencil-in camper’s name, age, shirt-size, and contact phone number prior to Wednesday, June 26 at the discounted original price of $120.

settle-up at the door.

Lastly, he will buy pizza for the first 10 contacts he receives between now and the end of this week, June 21.

On Saturday, June 15th Grayson County Deputies and Investigators responded to a sexual assault report. The investigation led to an arrest of a Jeremy Mikel Stephenson, a white male, 30 years old of Denison, Texas for Indecency with a Child. Stephenson has since posted a $30,000 bond. Investigators learned that Stephenson had previously worked as a firefighter and police officer in nearby cities, and is active at a church in Gainesville, Texas.

Investigators feel that due to the circumstances surrounding the case that there may be more victims. The Grayson County Sheriff’s Office encourages anyone with any information to contact the criminal investigations division and speak with Investigator Robert Todd at 903-813-4200 ext 2243.

One month ago, May 16, the Howe Quick Check was broken into and intruders got away with over 50 cartons of cigarettes. Early this morning, the store was once again breached and this time around 25 cartons were believed to be stolen.

The individuals were captured on security footage each time and are believed to be the same individuals in both robberies.

The store, at 411 W. Haning Street, was again closed at the time of the burglary and no one was injured or threatened.

The Howe Police Department were called to the scene early to begin an investigation.

HOWE, Texas – On Wednesday, June 12 at 9:15 pm, Howe police officers arrested 40-year-old Michael Jeremy Worthington of Bonham on an outstanding warrant for Driving While License Invalid and for Manufacture/Delivery of a Controlled Substance in Penalty Group 1, over 4 Grams. 

According to Howe police, the arrest was the result of a tip from a confidential source that Worthington was driving through Howe and he was wanted on a misdemeanor warrant.  “The warrant was verified prior to the stop and we knew Worthington was driving the car,” said Howe police Corporal David Morris. 

After Howe officers stopped the vehicle on northbound U.S. Highway 75 and spoke with Worthington and his passenger, a Texas State Trooper stopped to assist the officers.  Shortly thereafter, police say a motorist traveling northbound struck the trooper’s vehicle, sideswiped the Howe patrol car and the vehicle driven by Worthington, coming to rest in the grassy median between U.S. Highway 75 and the east access road. 

Worthington was arrested on the warrant, and a subsequent search of Worthington and the vehicle revealed approximately 2.8 ounces of methamphetamine and a set of digital scales, according to Howe Police Chief Carl Hudman.  He added “Had the Trooper not been there, we would have likely lost an officer and possibly others last night.  His cruiser prevented us from taking a direct hit and he alerted us when he saw the motorist failing to yield.”

Additional State Troopers responded to the scene and investigated the motor vehicle crash.  There were not any reported injuries.
