Downtown Howe fixture Clinton Upholstering to be no longer

Clinton Upholstering has been in Downtown Howe since July, 1978, but will close their doors for good on March 15 after 37 years.  The building owner Georgia Caraway has decided to use the 109 E. Haning St location with the 107 unit for her new business (The Howe Emporium) that will open on Founders Day.  Clinton Upholstering will now operate at 300 CR 1220, Savoy, Texas.

“Cowboys aren’t supposed to cry, so I’ve got that behind me.” said Billy M. Clinton.  “I don’t want to go.  We are thankful. We’ve been well blessed here.  We’re thankful for all of the friends we have here.  If you treat people right, most people will treat you right.  In Howe, if you give people good service with a good price and you treat them right, they’re going to tell everybody.”

He and his wife Lavonna opened the Clinton’s Home Furnishings in 1978, but changed their focus to upholstering in 1979 and renamed the business to Clinton Upholstering which it has been ever since.

“It was very difficult to tell Mr. Clinton that I needed the space his upholstery business occupied for my new store.” said Caraway.  “I know that this caused him great concern about where he would move. I am so relieved that his business will continue to thrive in its new location.”

There will be a full story in the Monday, Feb 23 edition of The Howe Enterprise.

Howe Alumni Baseball team looking for younger players

The Howe Bulldogs Alumni Baseball Team is looking for players for the game next Friday night, Feb. 20 at 7pm vs. the current Howe Bulldogs.  Atlanta Braves pitcher Garrett Fulenchek will toe the hill for the alumni and will play along side his dad and former Bulldog right fielder, James Fulenchek.

Some of the mainstays from the alumni games in years past are unable to participate.  Some holdovers from previous teams will be Larry McCarthy, James Fulenchek, and Kelly Gann, Dusty Womack and John Michael Stracener.  Several others are on-call and may participate.  Randle Nix, from last year’s playoff team has committed to play.  The alumni team is ready to pass the torch to the next generation of Howe baseball alumni.

A longball competition will take place at 6pm before the game, which is scheduled for 7pm on Friday night.  Some of the older former players that are unable to play in the game, such as Monte Walker, will participate in the longball competition.

Those willing to play for the Howe Alumni team need to call/text Monte Walker at 903-267-6704 or email at mwalker@howeenterprise.com.

Prettiest Little Town in Texas?

Keep Howe Beautiful’s board meeting last night ended with an extraordinary mission for 2015.  The organization’s goal for the years was to make Howe “The Prettiest Little Town in Texas.”  Inspired by the work of the late Mame Roberts who transformed Howe from a dreary passerby town in to “The Prettiest Little Town in Texas” – a name given to Howe by numerous publications including Readers Digest, The Rotarian Magazine and The Dallas Morning News.  It was Roberts’ vision to transform Howe and she was able to do so in the 1930’s and 40’s.

Just as Roberts was able to rally the community and gather large amounts of citizens to help with the project, Keep Howe Beautiful will be asking the same.  Citizens are asked to plant Zinnias on their properties and especially in the parks.  Just as 70 years ago, the most visible portions of Howe and the most unkept places in Howe will get the first attention.

Keep Howe Beautiful has a goal of $2,600 to be raised.  They are also looking for volunteers to help with the planting of the flowers around and throughout Howe.  New Beginnings Fellowship has already committed to helping in the project.  For those that want to donate monetarily can visit http://www.gofundme.com/m4be3s or send a check to Keep Howe Beautiful, P.O. Box 250, Howe, Texas 75459.  Those that want to volunteer help and time can contact the organization at khb@cityofhowe.org.

Mame Roberts was selected as one of the 12 charter members of the Howe Hall of Honor by the Howe Area Chamber of Commerce.  She will be inducted along with the other 11 in a ceremony to be held in Downtown Howe on April 24, 2015 at 7pm.  There will be a $15 cost for the ceremony that will benefit the Howe Chamber.  More information on the ceremony to be revealed later.

Keep Howe Beautiful’s Earth Day 5K Mud Run information

The Keep Howe Beautiful organization has announced that they will have  a 5K Mud Run in conjunction with Founders Day and also celebrate Earth Day all in one muddy morning on April 25, 2015.  The mud run will be held at C.C. Jones Park, east of downtown, and will be $40 for entry and $20 for the one mile fun run.  All proceeds from the event will go towards the organization’s project called “Prettiest Little Town in Texas” which is a revitalization project for Howe, which held that title in the 1940’s due to the overwhelming vision and success of Mame Roberts, a Howe citizen.
