Cheer signups will be the next two Wednesdays, May 13 and 20 from 3:30-5:30, at Athletic Cheer Force, 210 S. Collins Frwy in Howe. Anyone that is either new to cheer or is is moving to a new age group, or just needs a new uniform will need to be measured at signups. Please bring your child for measurements. Flyers will be left at the elementary for the kids to grab but will not be sent home in their folder.

Esther Oleta Carney Fulenwider Reatherford will be 100 years old on Sunday, May 24. A party to celebrate her birthday will be held that day at the Van Alstyne Senior Center. A barbeque meal and birthday cake will be served from noon until 2pm or 3pm. Esther’s family is hoping that everyone who has been her friend during the past century will come to help celebrate. Birthday cards will be welcome but no presents please.
Esther was just a toddler when her parents Bill & Julie Carney moved their little family from Arkansas to live in Grayson County Texas. Everything the couple owned was carried in a covered wagon, and they settled on a share-cropper farm in the Collinsville area. Esther was the oldest of eight. The Carney family lived on several farms, first to the East, then the West of Van Alstyne, and in 1937 moved into town.
Soon after graduation, Esther married Emmitt Fulenwider and over the next 18 or so years the couple had eleven (11) children. One boy died at birth and two of her sons, Roy and Carl, died within the recent past. Esther’s remaining children and their spouses are giving her the party for her 100th birthday, May 24.
In 1965, Esther married Jack Reatherford. The couple and 5 of the Fulenwider children lived in-between Sherman and Denison until they bought a home in the Louella community. Before Jack’s death in 2006, he and Esther were active in the Veteran’s organizations. Jack was the senior officer of the American Legion in Sherman and Esther was Vice President several times. They often represented the organization at the state convention. Also, Jack called Bingo for many years and Esther went along to play, often taking some of “her boys.”
Most of Esther’s children live in or near Grayson County. The oldest daughter Mary and husband Bob Reed live in Pilot Point. The second daughter Eddie Lee and husband Paul Purdom have a home in Van Alstyne. Youngest daughter Gale and husband Bill Cox live in Tom Bean. The Fulenwider sons include Alford (wife Joyce) of Whitesboro; John (wife Linda) who live near Denton; and oldest son Bill (wife Carol) who live in Pagosa Springs, Colorado. Esther’s youngest sons Dale and Lewis Fulenwider are single and live with her.
Each of the six couples has children, grandchildren and two have great-grandchildren, making Esther a great, great grandmother. It is hoped that all these dozens of Fulenwider immediate family members will be at the Senior Center in Van Alstyne on Sunday, May 24th, along with her only remaining sister Dorothy, and as many “nieces, nephews, grand and greats” who are able to come to this once-in-a-lifetime event. They cordially invite the dozens of friends who still remember Esther from at least one stage in her long life.
A barbeque lunch and cake will be served from noon until 2 or 3pm at the Van Alstyne Senior Center. Everyone who knows her is urged to come. Cards would be great! No presents please. Her birthday, Sunday May 24 from noon until 3 or so.

Howe – Jimmy Erskine Bearden passed, peacefully, from this earth on May 5, 2015 at Wilson N. Jones Hospital in Sherman, Texas. Jimmy was surrounded by his loving wife, sons, and grandsons along with his Pastor Duane Peters and Rose Peters. Jimmy Bearden was born in Howe, Texas on May 11, 1941. Jimmy attended Howe Schools where he played several sports and was quarterback of the football team in 1958 when the football program was reinstated at Howe. He was first team all-district and later named to the “All Century Howe Bulldog Team”. Jimmy graduated from Howe High School in 1959. He then married his high school sweetheart, Merle Jean Reeves, on January 12, 1962. Jimmy worked full time while attending college at East Texas State University where he completed his bachelor’s degree in accounting in December of 1968 and Master of Business Administration in May of 1973. Later that year Jimmy accepted a job at Magni-Fab Southwest Company in Howe. He later became Vice President of the company and General Manager of the Howe operation until his retirement in 2010. Jimmy was always involved in the local community and lent his support in many ways. He served on the Howe Volunteer Fire Department and held the rank of Fire Marshal. He served as League Commissioner for Howe Baseball in the late 1970s and early 1980s, coached several baseball teams, and was instrumental in the first fence that was placed at A.M. Ferguson Field. He served as a member of the Howe ISD Board of Trustees from 1979 to 1987 and spent the last six years as President of the Board. Jimmy was a member of the Howe Chamber of Commerce. He was also a member of the Howe Athletic, Band and Ag Booster clubs where many of his donations and creations from metal are still in use today. Jimmy was a Life Member of the Texas Association of Business where he served as Chairman. He was a supporter of several local fire departments. He was named Howe Citizen of the Year in 2001. Jimmy later became a founding member of the Inspiration Point Cowboy Church in Tom Bean, Texas.
Jimmy and Merle were married for 53 wonderful years and had three boys all of whom graduated from Howe High School. Jimmy and Merle have spent the last five years traveling the United States, visiting kids and grandkids.
Jimmy is survived by his wife and soul mate, Merle Bearden, his three sons Brett Bearden of Howe Texas, Philip Bearden and his wife Jennifer of Matthews, North Carolina, Kent Bearden and his wife Rachel of Las Vegas, Nevada. Grandchildren are Blake Bearden, Austin Bearden, Ethan Bearden and Emma Bearden. Sister, Martha Moore and her husband Johnny of Commerce, Texas, brother Tommy Bearden and his wife Barbara of Garland, Texas, and several nieces and nephews. Jimmy had a special relationship with in-laws Joe and Vanessa Feudo of Corpus Cristi, Texas.
Jimmy was preceded in death by his father Erskine Laverne Bearden and Mother Ann Elizabeth Caraway Bearden.
Services are under the direction of Scoggins Funeral Home in Van Alstyne, Texas. Visitation will be held at the Van Alstyne location on Thursday May 7th from 6 to 8 pm. Funeral services will be Friday May 8th at 10 am at the Chapel at Scoggins Funeral Home in Van Alstyne, Texas. Pastor Duane Peters will be officiating the service.
Interment will be at Pilot Grove Cemetery. Pallbearers are David Ellis, Jeff Byers, Bill Large, Wayne Swineford, Chad Catching and Joe Feudo. Honorary Pallbearers are Billy Martin and Dr. Jack Trammell along with the Howe High School Class of 1959.

This Saturday, May 9, the National Association of Letter Carriers, United States Postal Service, the United Way, Feeding America and other partners are asking the people of Howe to help Stamp Out Hunger. Now in its 23rd year, the annual food drive has grown into a national effort that assists millions of Americans struggling to put food on the table.
The Stamp Out Hunger food drive, held on the second Saturday in May, has become the nation’s largest single-day food drive. In 2014, generous Americans donated 72.5 million pounds of food, feeding 30 million people. This was the 11th consecutive year of at least 70 million pounds collected by letter carriers.
The Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive has collected well over one billion pounds of food since it began. “We’re proud to support this food drive,” said Postmaster LeAndra Beckemeyer. “We’re asking residents for their support to help make this another successful year. It’s easy to make a donation: simply leave a bag of nonperishable food items by the mailbox to help your neighbors in need.”
The need for food assistance exists in every community in America. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, 50 million Americans are food insecure, meaning they live at risk of hunger. Perhaps most alarming is the fact that nearly 16 million children in America are struggling with hunger. In addition, 4.8 million seniors face choices between paying rent, utilities, and having nutritious food.
To participate in the annual Stamp Out Hunger food drive, residents are encouraged to leave a sturdy bag containing non-perishable food items, such as canned soup, canned vegetables, peanut butter, pasta, rice or cereal, next to their mailbox prior to the time of regular mail delivery on Saturday, May 9. Letter carriers will collect these food donations as they deliver the mail. All food collected will stay in Howe at the local food banks.

Longtime Howe resident Jimmy Bearden has passed this afternoon at Wilson N. Jones Regional Medical Center after a long battle with lung disease. He was surrounded by family. Born May 11, 1941, Bearden was a 1959 graduate of Howe High School. He retired in 2010 after serving as general manager of Magni-Fab Southwest for many years. He was the first quarterback of the Howe Bulldogs in 1958 after the school’s nine year absence from the sport. Bearden served many years on the Howe ISD Board of Trustees and was 2001 Norma J. Wallace Citizen of the Year.

This morning, Grayson County crews are primarily working the pot hole patching crews in Luella.
This afternoon they are planning to shoot their first asphalt of the season on a short piece of Luella Road just south of LWSC Rd. Due to the curve reducing visibility, there will be short traffic delays as they will stop traffic twice for five to ten minutes during the process. Grayson County Precinct 4 Commissioner Jeff Whitmire encourages drivers to detour around to Harrell Rd during the work.
May 1, 2015 – At approximately 11:00pm Howe Police Officers Keith Milks and Jordan Clark arrested a 25-year-old man and 27-year-old man (both from Durant, OK) for possessing a quarter of an ounce of cocaine. The arrest was the result of a consent search on the 27-year-old’s vehicle which was stopped on US Hwy 75 for a traffic violation. Neither suspect admitted knowing the drug was in the vehicle. They were booked into the Grayson County Jail for PCS PG 1 > 4g < 200g..
Varsity and junior varsity cheerleaders were announced last week and selected for the varsity squad were Erin Ansley, Elizabeth Corbin, Jessica Doty, Kaylee Dwyer, Catherine Honaker, Natalie Honore, Whitney Kirby, Katelyn Kirk, Caitlan Little, Allison Morgan, Jaylyn Mosse, and Ashley Pelt.
Junior varsity cheerleaders selected were Mikayla Doty, Taylor Hartsfield, Gianna Henry, Natalie Murphy, Riley Potter, and Jorie Seibold.
The Bulldog varsity mascot is Chris Blaszak and the junior varsity mascot was named Kelsey Lux.
Early voting for Howe ISD Board of Trustees will go on through next Tuesday at the district administration office, located at 105 W. Tutt St. On Election Day, a second voting location will be open at the Dorchester Town Hall, located at 373 Main St.
Howe ISD has five candidates vying for three seats. Mark Abner (incumbent), Bruce Dawsey, (incumbent), Amber Krantz-Dimayuga, Janie Finney, and Micah Belden will compete for the three open positions. One seat came open when former Howe ISD longtime teacher Pat Stewart did not seek another term.
