Howe Chamber lands Stevie Ray Vaughan clone ‘Texas Flood’ for Founders Day in May

When the calendar flips to 2018 and the leaves pop back on the trees, Howe’s downtown will rock like never before as the Howe Area Chamber of Commerce has announced that ‘Texas Flood’ will be the featured entertainment of the evening from 5:30 pm to 8 pm.  The entertainment was made possible thanks to a sponsorship by Tomlin Investments.

Texas Flood is a Stevie Ray Vaughan tribute band that looks, sounds, and feels the part of the famous Texan guitarist.  Texas Flood has become one of the premier blues bands in all of North Texas. Evolving from the original tribute to Stevie Ray Vaughan, Texas Flood pays tribute to the legends as well as the future of the blues through their own music and style. With an in-your-face show and raw high-energy-playing Tommy Katona takes the listener on a journey through the blues.

The chamber is hoping to still have Bent Creek play from 2 pm to 5 pm to open the festivities.  The festival starts at 2 pm and ends at 8 pm on Saturday, May 5, 2018.

American Pickers coming to North Texas and looking for leads

Mike Wolfe, Frank Fritz, and their team are excited to return to Texas! They plan to film episodes of the hit series American Pickers throughout the region in Winter 2018.

American Pickers is a documentary series that explores the fascinating world of antique ‘picking’ on History. The hit show follows Mike and Frank, two of the most skilled pickers in the business, as they hunt for America’s most valuable antiques. They are always excited to find sizeable, unique collections and learn the interesting stories behind them.

As they hit the back roads from coast to coast, Mike and Frank are on a mission to recycle and rescue forgotten relics. Along the way, the pickers want to meet characters with remarkable and exceptional items. The pair hopes to give historically significant objects a new lease on life, while learning a thing or two about America’s past along the way.

Mike and Frank have seen a lot of rusty gold over the years and are always looking to discover something they’ve never seen before. They are ready to find extraordinary items and hear fascinating tales about them. American Pickers is looking for leads and would love to explore your hidden treasure. If you or someone you know has a large, private collection or accumulation of antiques that the Pickers can spend the better part of the day looking through, send us your name, phone number, location and description of the collection with photos to:  americanpickers@cineflix.com or call 855-OLD-RUST.

TxDOT urges drivers to ‘End The Streak’ of daily deaths

AUSTIN – At least one person has died on Texas roadways every day since Nov. 7, 2000. In an effort to end this grim and deadly 17-year milestone, the Texas Department of Transportation, through its #EndTheStreakTX campaign, reminds drivers to stay alert, obey traffic laws and take personal responsibility behind the wheel.

“It’s heartbreaking to know somebody has lost a spouse, child, friend or neighbor every day for the past 17 years on Texas roadways,” said TxDOT Executive Director James Bass. “According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 94 percent of these deadly crashes are due to driver error — things like distracted driving, speeding and drunk driving. We can stop this deadly streak if every driver makes it a priority to be safe, focused and responsible. Let’s end the streak.”

To help raise awareness of this tragic, daily statistic, TxDOT is asking people to change their social media profile pictures to the image available for download here. Throughout November, TxDOT’s social media pages will share facts and information about the last 17 years of roadway fatalities and invite Texans to publicly show their commitment to ending the streak of deadly days by sharing these posts with the hashtag #EndTheStreakTX. TxDOT also will invite the public to share personal stories of loved ones lost in car crashes on its social media pages using photo and video testimonials with the hashtag #EndTheStreakTX.

Since Nov. 7, 2000, fatalities resulting from motor vehicle crashes on Texas roadways have numbered 59,388. The leading causes of fatalities continue to be failure to stay in one lane, alcohol and speed. To decrease the chances of roadway crashes and fatalities, TxDOT reminds drivers to:

  • Buckle seatbelts – all passengers need to be buckled
  • Pay attention – put phone away and avoid distractions
  • Never drink and drive – drunk driving kills; get a sober ride home
  • Drive the speed limit – obey speed limits and drive slower when weather conditions warrant

Howe at Pilot Point 2017

Game Number 753 in school history.  Howe has a record of 381-347-24 since 1935.  Howe has lost nine games in a row dating back to last season’s regional playoff loss to eventual state champion Mineola.  It is the longest losing streak for the Bulldogs football program since a 12-game losing streak from October 2004 – October 2005.

The Bulldogs are scoring an average of 11.38 points per game which the 16th fewest in the 74 years of the program.  On the flip side, the defense is allowing 37.50 points per game which is ranks 73rd of the 74 teams.  Statistically speaking, this Howe Bulldogs team has a point-per-game margin of -26.13 which is the worst among all Bulldogs teams going back to 1935.  The previous mark was -25.00 per game by the 2004 team.  Howe’s defense is allowing 385.13 yards per game which is the most of all recorded teams in Howe history.  But it is without question, no Howe team has ever played a tougher schedule than the one this current season.

This 2017 season has been eerily similar to the team 25 years ago that went 2-8 after Howe had gone through several seasons of winning records and gold footballs.  That year Joey McQueen, who had the fifth best team in school history in 1991, all of a sudden had the third worst in 1992.  Howe scored 27 and gave up 7 on average in 1991 only to reverse the trend in 1992 and score 10 per game and allow 27.  The 2016 Bulldogs scored 31 per game and allowed 22 and the 2017 Bulldogs have scored an average of 11 and allowed 38.  With a shallow pipeline, the 1992 reversal season for McQueen became his final year in Howe as he took the same position at Mason ISD before the 1993 season.   Howe Head Coach Zack Hudson, however, has a pipeline that is stocked, but not until the current seventh graders arrive as freshmen in two years.

The Series:

Howe is 14-19-1 against Pilot Point going back to 1935.  The Bearcats won 8-straight from 1989-1998 and the streak was snapped on one of the greatest games in school history when Howe won, 28-14 in the bi-district championship in Denton.  Since that game, the series is even at 2-2 for each team.
