Howe’s downtown mural is entering completion phase. Austin College’s Art and Art History staff member Heidi Rushing added several layers to the mural today that is nearing the completion. The mural is scheduled to be completed by Founders Day weekend, April 24-25. Also, eleven “barnlight” fixtures were added to the wall this week by Jim Jackson Electrical Services, Inc.
Howe ISD will be losing longtime Assistant Superintendent Ritchie Bowling to Maypearl ISD as he accepts the position of superintendent there. Bowling released this statement earlier:
“Cari and I are very excited about this new adventure in our lives, but it is very bittersweet. I have spent 10 years in Howe and I have loved it. Our family is very close to this community and our hearts will continue to be no matter where we roam. I was born in Sherman, TX, lived in Achille, OK, but when I think of home I think of Howe. It has been my honor to work with such outstanding teachers, aides, custodians, secretaries, cafeteria and maintenance personnel, and administrators. It has been my privilege and honor to be a small part in the lives of our kids, parents, grandparents, and community of Howe.
We are excited about this place called Maypearl, we have visited the area often, and we look forward to building a future there. I just ask you keep us in your thoughts and prayers and I will do the same for you.”
Bowling will have to follow the 21-day day waiting period before being able to sign the contract with Maypearl ISD. His start date is not yet set.
The Howe Area Chamber of Commerce has announced that in conjunction with the Founders Day festivities will be a free downtown concert from 6pm-8pm featuring Texas Country Music artist Chris McCandless. His hit “It’s All In The Jeans” is currently in the #87 spot on the Texas charts. The event is sponsored in part by Abby’s Restaurant, Salvage Junky, Howe Mercantile and My Estrella.
The Founders Day event will have an 8am – 6pm trade show as well as a horseshoe tournament, lawn mower races, dance performances and martial arts performance. Fred Spears will play live from 2pm – 5pm in downtown.
It’s a city party with food, fun and live music.

Bulldogs Head Coach Torrey Ognoskie called today’s 2-1 win over Pottsboro a big win. The game that was postponed Friday to today turned into a pitching masterpiece by starting pitcher Josh Griffin, who went the distance for the win. Full recap will be in Monday’s Howe Enterprise.
New owners of 103 E. Haning, Tom and Leslie Defrange have found that above the awning are windows that open. It took over 20 minutes to open each window that are equipped with original hinges and fasteners.
Also found were sets of unused original hardwood flooring.
The Keep Howe Beautiful program spent two hours on Saturday morning cleaning the trash from across the Dollar General store on L.B. Kirby Avenue this morning. They also cleaned the massive amounts of trash across from the duplexes on Farmington Road. One member of the committee reported several trash bags of animal poop that was thrown across the road into the trees. They are urging citizens to please pick contain their trash in into the proper places. While it is nice to have volunteers pick up trash on occasions, it is certainly not their responsibility to clean up after the citizens.
Keep Howe Beautiful’s mission of 2015 is for Howe to become “The Prettiest Little Town in Texas.”
Longtime school teacher Edna Dutton peacefully passed away this morning, March 20, 2015 at the age of 97. Family night will be Monday at 6 pm at Scoggins Funeral Home in Van Alstyne. The funeral will also be at Scoggins Funeral Home in Van Alstyne on Tuesday at 2 pm.
Obituary:
Edna Dutton age 97 of Van Alstyne passed away Friday, March 20, 2015 at her residence. She was born February 17, 1918 in Grayson County to John and Ella Shaw Skipworth. She married Arnold Dutton on June 1, 1946 in Rockwall, Texas. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and 9 siblings. She is survived by her daughters and their husbands Camille and Larry Miller of Albuquerque, New Mexico and Mickey and Mike Horton of Van Alstyne. She is also survived by 6 grandchildren, Corey Horton of Van Alstyne, Texas, Yvette Jones of Crane, Texas, Luke Miller and wife Lori of Albuquerque, New Mexico, Damion Horton of The Colony, Texas, Lauren Groves and husband Chris of Albuquerque, New Mexico and Heath Horton of Howe, Texas and 8 great-grandchildren. Mrs. Dutton taught school for a number of years in Howe. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Howe for most of her adult life and was a member of Wilson N Jones auxiliary for many years. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm Tuesday, March 24, 2014 at Scoggins Funeral Home in Van Alstyne with Rev. Roger Tidwell and Rev. Larry Miller officiating. Burial will follow in the Van Alstyne Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Monday night from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at the funeral home. Pallbearers are grandsons Corey Horton, Luke Miller, Damion Horton, Heath Horton, great-grandson Caleb Jones and grandson-in-law Chris Groves. Keep Howe Beautiful’s 2015 mission to once again become, “The Prettiest Little Town in Texas” just got a big boost from a Van Alstyne business. The Green Acre Garden Center donated nearly 100 packages of flower seeds for the organization to plant this spring. The organization is having a membership drive of $10 which will include a welcome bag of seeds and potting soil. Full story in Monday’s Howe Enterprise.
