Howe ISD students will honor 13 Howe historical figures at a chamber dinner during the week of Howe’s 150th birthday

As part of the week-long celebration of Howe’s Sesquicentennial, the Howe Area Chamber of Commerce and Howe ISD are teaming up for a historical theater and dinner. On Thursday, September 15 at 6:30 pm at Summit Hill Elementary, Legend Bank will host the dinner provided by Gabriela’s of Howe. During the dinner, members of the Howe Hall of Honor will be acted out by students. There are nine historical individuals to Howe that are no longer with us that will be introduced in first person by students. Those are Jabez Haning, W.P. Thompson, A.M. Ferguson, Mame Roberts, Charles R. Thompson, Arthur Boyle, Tony Brinkley, L.B. Kirby, Norma Wallace. There will also be living legends of Howe which will include Elmer Schenk, Carrie Waller, Jean Norman, and Coach Steve Simmons.

Howe will celebrate throughout the week beginning on Monday at 6 pm in Downtown Howe with an 1880s gunfight and an 1880s Murder Mystery at Summit Gardens. First Baptist Church will be hosting a dessert table with games following the gunfight. The gunfight and FBC Howe event is free for all. Tuesday, the chamber will host a 7 pm parade from Howe Middle School down Highway 5 to Bulldog Stadium where there will be a watermelon feast hosted by Cory Hernandez State Farm and sausage-on-a-stick by Howe Athletic Booster Club. Chill Out Shaved Ice will also be there. The original plan for a bonfire is still being discussed now that the burn ban has been lifted. There is no charge to enter the parade. Wednesday night will feature a community worship service at Bulldog Stadium beginning at 7 pm. Local churches are partnering together to host the event. Don’s Smokehouse is providing ice cream at the concession stand. The event is free for everyone.

Thursday night is the Howe Chamber Dinner and Howe Historical Theater mentioned above. The week-long celebration will conclude Friday with the homecoming football game at Bulldog Stadium vs. Tioga which was Howe’s first opponent in 1935.
