Jennifer Adkins, 1970-2018

Jennifer Lynne Adkins was born in San Antonio on April 17, 1970 and slipped from our loving arms into the hands of God on August 31, 2018. She was preceded in passing by her brother and close partner-in-crime in numerous childhood adventures, Steven Anthony.

A 1988 graduate of Churchill High School in San Antonio, she also attended Incarnate Word College. She is survived by her loving husband of 16 years, Gregory Scott Adkins; beloved son and daughter, Jackson and Hayden; mother, Sylvia M. Cantu; and brother, Julian Cantu. She is also survived by her beloved aunt, Gloria McAllister (Mike) of California and sister-in-law, Robin Adkins Metcalf (Shane) of Oklahoma. In addition, she is survived by her father, Rudy Cantu (Sheri) and their children David and Rose of San Antonio; as well as numerous aunts, cousins and other family members, and her cuddly canine buddy, Newman, who even now expects her to walk through the door.

A true testament to her nurturing and caring nature is evidenced by the question posed by the nursing staff to her husband, “Who is she … where does she work?” because of the tremendous outpouring of love demonstrated by the countless number of friends who visited to pray with family or simply pay their respects. The answer is simple. She was a caring daughter, loving wife, devoted mother and fierce friend, known as much for her positive attitude as for her infectious laugh. Her extended family were all the Howe schools and the community which she so loved and to which she contributed so much of her time and effort. She impacted and influenced a great number of people and was loved by all who knew her.

A memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 8, 2018 at the First United Methodist Church located at 810 N. Denny Street (Hwy 5) in Howe TX. Chaplain Tom Medley will officiate. The family will receive family and friends immediately following. In lieu of flowers, an education fund has been set up for the children. TxDOT schedules second public meeting on US 75 Project

PARIS – Texas Department of Transportation officials today announced that a public meeting is set for 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sept. 6 at the Sherman Municipal Ballroom (405 N. Rusk Street) in Sherman, Texas, to share the latest schematic design for the US 75 Project in Grayson County with the public and other interested stakeholders.

The US 75 Project is being developed to provide long-term transportation and operational improvements on US 75 and US 82 in Grayson County. It follows the agency’s US 75 Corridor Study which assessed safety, maintenance and system efficiency, congestion and freight reliability, environmental sustainability, transportation choices and economic vitality along US 75.

The proposed changes to this important highway are designed to improve safety, address traffic congestion and improve traffic operations, and address deficiencies in this aging roadway. The US 75 Project will run from the intersection of FM 1417 south of Sherman northward to the intersection of FM 120 in Denison. Roadway changes and improvements will be constructed in phases as the project progresses, TxDOT officials said.

The overall goal of the US 75 Project is to reconstruct this portion of the highway to add main traffic lanes, continuous frontage roads and U-turns. Access and egress ramps, bridges, and highway intersections will be reconstructed as necessary, also using phased construction. The proposed highway improvements will include renovation of the US 75 and US 82 intersections, including frontage road lanes and U-turns, and intersection improvements at North Travis Street and Loy Lake Road.

All interested stakeholders are invited to attend the Sept. 6 public meeting to view the latest schematic plans and to provide their input. No formal presentation will be given; the come-and-go public meeting format will provide interested citizens and others a chance to review project details and preliminary construction plans and schedules with TxDOT staff and consultants who are developing the project.

The overall project is valued at more than $161 million in phased construction costs, TxDOT officials said. The target date for phased construction to begin is December 2019.

Howe vs. Ponder Pregame Notes

It is season number 75 for the Howe Bulldogs who started the football program officially on September 20, 1935 in Tioga.  Howe did not field a team from 1949-1957 due to a lack of participants.  The Bulldogs have an overall record of 382-348-24 heading into the 2018 season.

Howe has a 2-2 record versus Ponder dating back to the first game in 2010.  Howe won that first matchup, 43-10 at Ponder.  Howe lost in 2011, 22-6 at home.  The Bulldogs also lost early in the season of 2014 in Ponder, 27-20, but bounced back in 2015 to romp the Lions 49-0 at home.  Overall the Bulldogs have outscored Ponder, 118-59 in the four games.

Howe is coming off a 1-9 season from a year ago.  It was the first time the ‘Dogs had only won one game since 2005.  Howe has never had a winless season but won only one game in 1962, 1963, 1975, 2004, 2005, and 2017.

Bill Jehling will start his tenure as the head coach of Howe tonight.  He’s 42-years-old, of San Antonio, transferred to Pittsburg, Pennsylvania where he played football and baseball at Duquesne University (BA, MA).  He’s a veteran of the US Marine Corps where he served from 1997-2005 including a tour in Iraq.

Bill Jehling overall record:  8-31

2013 Cushing, 1-9
2014 Cushin, 4-6
2016 Hamshire-Fannet, 1-9
2017 Hamshire-Fannet, 2-7
2018 Howe, 0-0

Jehling replaces Zack Hudson, who went 30-28 at Howe and recently took the head coaching position at 4A Mabank.  Hudson was 29-19 heading into 2017 and holds the record for most playoff games and wins in school history with eight games and five wins.

Howe has an enrollment of 341 which is barely over the cutoff of 334 for Class 3A, Division II.  That makes Howe the fifth smallest 3A, Division I school in the state.  Ponder checks in with an enrollment of 416 which is comparable to Pottsboro’s 424.  Howe’s district mates are Bonham, Rains, Van Alstyne, Commerce, Pottsboro, and Lone Oak.  Bonham is the enrollment leader with 488.

Ponder is in the same District 4-3A with Bowie, Whitesboro, Pilot Point, Brock, Boyd, and Paradise.   The enrollment leader in that district is Bowie with 495.

The Lions are coached by Russell Ballard who is 12-19 since 2015 at Ponder.  They’ve finished 3-7, 6-5, and 3-7 in those seasons.  Prior to Ponder, Ballard was at Ranchview High School in the Carrollton Farmers Branch ISD where he was the offensive coordinator and head coach of boys track.  He also taught and coached at Fort Worth ISD at North Side and Diamon Hill-Jarvis High Schools.

Ballard is a graduate of Electra High School.

Listen to the live broadcast for the ‘Air Segleski’

On the broadcast, you might hear a reference a few times to “Air Segleski” and you might be wondering, ‘what does that mean?’  Howe’s Defensive Coordinator is a very excitable coach and when the ‘Dogs make a great defensive play, he will often jump in the air several feet.   A one-foot high jump is usually for third down turn-away or a batted ball.  A two-foot high jump indicates a sack or a tackle for a loss.  A three-foot jump usually is for a fumble recovery, interception, or a “snot-flopper” of a hit.  Listen tonight as we hope for a 3-foot Air Segleski.

Judy Bower, 1935-2018

Judy Crain Bower, aged 83, joined the ranks of angels in the early hours of August 27, 2018. She is preceded in death by her parents, Jesse Lee Crain, Sr. and Kate Crawford Crain; her sister, Mary Francis Hagler; and her husband, Joseph Lynn Bower.

She was born in Nacogdoches, Texas on March 27, 1935. After graduating a semester early from Nacogdoches High School in December 1953, she enrolled at Stephen F. Austin University where she earned a bachelor’s degree in elementary education and a master’s degree in art. While at the university, Judy also met her husband, Joe Bower. They were married March 23, 1955 until the time of his death in 1977.

After college, Judy began her teaching career, which would last over 30 years and stretch across the state of Texas as well as one year in Birmingham, Alabama where she was one of the first white women to teach in an integrated school. Education was her primary passion; so no matter where she went, she poured her heart into instilling a love of the English language in all who sat in her class.

After she retired from teaching in 1988, Judy continued to be a champion for the welfare of children by becoming a caseworker for the Jasper County CPS. On multiple occasions, she even brought displaced children into her home to see that they were properly fed, showered, and clothed before placing them in foster care.

In 1995, Judy returned to Van Alstyne, Texas where she helped found the South Grayson County Republican Club and was actively involved for over 10 years. She also helped establish the Footlighters Community Theater Group in 2001 and the Beacon Hill Quilting Group in 2018.

Judy is survived by her older brother, Jesse Lee “Skeet” Crain, Jr.; her children—Robert Wayne Bower of Monet, MO; Leslie Bower Smith and her husband Kenny of Pottsboro, TX; Drew Bower Stringfellow and her husband Mike of Sachse, TX; Paul Bower and his wife Christine of IL; six grandchildren and their spouses; and 10 great-grandchildren along with many nieces, nephews, and students.

A memorial service will be held at the Howe Church of Christ at 5 p.m. on Thursday, August 30, 2018. Dinner will be served afterward so that guests can share their favorite “Judy stories”. Additionally, out of respect for Judy’s life-long passion for education, the family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Howe ISD Memorial Scholarship. All donations need to be sent to Howe High School, 200 E. Ponderosa Rd. Howe, TX.

Services are under the direction of Scoggins Funeral Home & Crematory, 637 W. Van Alstyne, Pkwy. Van Alstyne, TX; 7595. 903-482-5225 you may sign the online register book at www.scogginsfuneralhome.com.
