Howe Winterguard is third in state

From this week’s Howe Enterprise:

Last weekend the Howe HS Winterguard participated in the Novice Championships of the North Texas Colorguard Association at Richardson Pearce High School in Richardson, TX. There were three rounds in the contest. Howe was in the second round where they placed third which earned them a bronze medal. Every time the group has participated in a contest this spring they have finished in the top two or three for their division. Howe has never had a Winterguard before this year.

Mr. Celestino Sosa, assistant band director at Little Elm High School, wrote, choreographed and staged the show for them while Kayla and Taylor Cook were the techs for the group. While never having participated in Winterguard, all directors were thrilled with their placings at all events.

Fulenchek to remain in Florida

From this week’s Howe Enterprise:

11079534_10155339000320710_6884827953296668858_nGarrett Fulenchek arrived in Florida earlier in March and is continuing to battle to with big dreams of Georgia one day. One must remember that the 18-yearold hard throwing right-hander is in the Braves organization which has a reputation of knowing what they are doing with pitching. This might mean that Fulenchek spends a little more time grooming than if he were in an organization who might feel tempted to bring him along a little quicker than normal. Fulenchek seems to be on pace to pitch for Class-A Rome in June.

Howe Chamber to host free downtown concert

From this week’s Howe Enterprise:

Last year Founders Day was hours away from being cancelled at the last minute due to the lack of vendor participants. With the infiltration of Keep Howe Beautiful and now the new restarted Howe Chamber of Commerce, this year’s event is scheduled to be the largest and is anticipated to be the most attended Founders Day event since the very first one 29 years ago.

The new Howe Area Chamber of Commerce has enlisted not one, but two live music entertainment events to take place in the area between Abby’s Restaurant and City Hall. Fred Spears will play from 2pm – 5pm with his version of old-time country music. And at 6 pm, Pilot Point native Chris McCandless will bring his Top 100 hit “It’s All in the Jeans to Howe, Texas. That concert will also take place between Abby’s Restaurant and City Hall. Downtown businesses, Advantage Business Machines, Abby’s Restaurant, Salvage Junky, Howe Mercantile and My Estrella Restaurants all pulled together to make this possible.

Citizens are asked to bring their own lawn chairs. McCandless fell in love with country music at a young age. With a rodeo junkie dad, every weekend of each summer found him in a different town and at a different rodeo. The rodeo dance was the highlight of every weekend for Chris. He fondly remembers, “Friday afternoon was spent polishing boots or washing the truck so I could hit the road with my dad.” The Chris McCandless show is truly a walk through country music history. From classic to outlaw to red dirt and top 40 hits from the ’80’s through today, classic rock, and a country twist on some ’80’s pop, the boys will please crowds of all ages and keep them on the dance floor. Even their originals are true blue country that would make the troubadours of the past proud. Chris’ first radio single “Kiss You All Over” spent over 10 weeks on the Texas charts and he has just released a new single titled “It’s All In The Jeans”. Chris has opened for such great acts as Easton Corbin, Deryl Dodd, 1100 Springs, Aaron Watson, Zane Williams, Brandon Rhyder, Josh Thompson and many more. The new Howe Area Chamber of Commerce has been very active in their first three months of activity. With a new home scheduled to open in April at 101 E. Haning, they will host the First Annual Howe Hall of Honor Induction Ceremony on the eve of Founders Day on April 24 at 7pm. They are also sponsoring a horseshoe tournament and a lawnmower race during the Founders Day event. A grand opening of the new office is coming soon.

Howe mural now lit

Thanks to Jim Jackson Electrical Services, Howe’s new mural is now lit up from sun down to sun up.  The LED lighting system requires very little electricity to change the look of downtown Howe.  It is run on a photocell that automatically runs the lights based on the daylight.

Howe’s downtown mural entering completion phase

Howe’s downtown mural is entering completion phase.  Austin College’s Art and Art History staff member Heidi Rushing added several layers to the mural today that is nearing the completion.  The mural is scheduled to be completed by Founders Day weekend, April 24-25.  Also, eleven “barnlight” fixtures were added to the wall this week by Jim Jackson Electrical Services, Inc.

Howe ISD will be losing longtime Assistant Superintendent Ritchie Bowling to Maypearl ISD as he accepts the position of superintendent there.  Bowling released this statement earlier:

“Cari  and I are very excited about this new adventure in our lives, but it is very bittersweet. I have spent 10 years in Howe and I have loved it. Our family is very close to this community and our hearts will continue to be no matter where we roam. I was born in Sherman, TX, lived in Achille, OK, but when I think of home I think of Howe. It has been my honor to work with such outstanding teachers, aides, custodians, secretaries, cafeteria and maintenance personnel, and administrators. It has been my privilege and honor to be a small part in the lives of our kids, parents, grandparents, and community of Howe.

We are excited about this place called Maypearl, we have visited the area often, and we look forward to building a future there. I just ask you keep us in your thoughts and prayers and I will do the same for you.”

Bowling will have to follow the 21-day day waiting period before being able to sign the contract with Maypearl ISD.  His start date is not yet set.
