1942 Howe Bulldogs

3-1-1, District Champions

The Howe Bulldog players were in a major dilemma to start the 1942 season. Coach H.A. McDonald was gone, and no other coach was there to fill the void. The players were not about to let that stand in their way. They pleaded with High School Principal Charles R. Thompson who eventually told the players that if they were serious about playing then he would drive the bus. Led by quarterback Tony Brinkley, who called the plays both offensively and defensively, and captains Robert Miller and Henry Lee Allgood, the Bulldogs went on to win the district title in one of the most storied seasons in Howe history. Led by Robert Miller, and J.C. Gallamore, Howe would play Sanger in Bi-District. The record book shows a 12-12 tie to Sanger, but former player L.B. Kirby explained that Robert Miller scored the winning touchdown as time expired and even the Sanger fans appeared to be taking up for the Howe team as the officials called him down at the one yard line.
