Controversy was the theme of the 2002 season with a number of players being waived from the roster because of disciplinary reasons. Still, Howe managed a shot at the playoffs with a last second rush to the finish. However, the Dogs finished again at 3-7 and missed the playoffs for the second straight season. Despite the controversy, Coach McFarlin was named Co-Coach of the Year, but his contract was not renewed after the 2002 season.
